  • I grew up hearing (and eating) "green fried tomatoes," but this seems to be the more common form.

  • Yum! And fried pickles? Did you eat them or is that a newer phenomenon?

    October 28, 2007

  • Fried pickles seem to have originated recently at state fairs. Not a Southern invention, even though Southerners tend to fry everything.

    October 28, 2007

  • Are you sure? The place I used to order them all the time said they were a southern delicacy. Only if served with comeback sauce.

    Whatever that is, it's good.

    October 28, 2007

  • I never head about them as I was growing up. Maybe I ran around with the wrong crowd as my mother would say. (On many occasions, come to think of it.)

    October 28, 2007

  • Nah, probably they're just a later invention, whether southern or not.

A later invention, like Tostitos. Remember when they were invented? ;)

    October 28, 2007

  • Distinctly. I also remember when Pepsi came out with the 16 oz. bottle, and Screaming Yellow Zonkers, and a variety of other junk foods. (Do they still make Screaming Yellow Zonkers?)

    October 28, 2007

  • Forgot to mention, c_b--comeback sauce is basically ketchup and mayonnaise spiced with mustard and horseradish or chili sauce. I remember it being served mostly with seafood. I should add it to the list.

    October 28, 2007

  • Screaming Yellow Zonkers! I loved those things! And apparently, they're still around.

    October 28, 2007

  • Like Cracker Jacks without the peanuts!

    October 28, 2007

  • Although I do love the peanuts. :-)

    October 28, 2007

  • Here's the real test, though: who remembers Freakies cereal?

    I do! I do!

And yet, nobody I've met seems to remember them. For years and years I thought I must have grown up in some kind of parallel universe. Then I met someone, just this year, who vaguely remembered them. It's surprising how relieved I felt.

    October 28, 2007

  • Got me there, but they seem to have evolved into quite the cult phenomenon.

    October 28, 2007

  • I remember Freakies cereal! And they threw in free Freakies creature magnets (or little toy figures, or some such thing) in each box. Let's see...there was Cowmumble, Gargle, and um...that's all I remember. Must be blocking.

    ;-)

  • If you click on skipvia's helpfully provided link, you'll find all their names.

    Ah, the memories.

If I recall, it tasted like Cap'n Crunch cereal and there was nothing particularly special about it, except the characters and magnets.
